Backlinks allow the search engines to know that your website is linked to external sources and is therefore wanted by other people. Because of that, your priority as a novice business owner, would be to concentrate on generating backlinks and creating content.

If you do not do SEO for your website, and your website is not “search Engine friendly” then you will not rank anywhere on any of the major search engine like Google, Yahoo, MSN (now LIVE), Ask and Altavista. You want to rank, because if you do not rank anywhere on at least one of these your website does not exist.

Correct and proper search engine optimization generates high traffic volume. If out of the total number of hits received 10 or 20% of those convert to sales, with hundreds or even thousands of hits a day, your sales would take a boost and you get a good sale turnout.
